During one of my on-campus work study job this morning I was instructed to:
* Make 15 xeroxes
* Burn a CD
* Open a box (yes, swear, went something like this "hey morgan- can you open this box for me?" like they had it waiting for me or something ... it was hard -- it had tape on it and everything ... what would they have done without me, that box would have sat on their desk all day)

Makes me feel so important that I am around for these ppl to do these difficult tasks. But hey, at least it wasn't as exciting as it normally is. Usually I am asked to scan entire books. Yes, individually scan each page of entire book.

I am so important. Wow.

College Life. (the sober version)

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am at this current moment in time. I just feel like everything is going right. I honestly do. Of course- I am writing this BEFORE I start my database homework- so this feeling is sure to change before the day is over.

It just feel such a sense of newness in the air. I feel like I can conquer anything. I have met so many new people lately- and are developing new friendships. I feel like this is what I should have been doing in college all along- but have been distracted. I feel like I am finding myself, I am listening to new music as well- which somehow seems to have a big impact on me. It soothes me so much.

Newspaper is going great- and I am getting compliments about my articles. There is no greater feeling in this world than to know people read what you write. Words are so strong. I even learned that one of the computer science profesors that I didn't even know lectured on my article the other night. :)

My parents are trying to adopt. I will post more info about this at a later date (since nothing is official yet- I am not even sure if the kids know this is what is going on). They are great though- I was so worried that I wouldn't know how to handle little kids again (ages 5 and 7), but I quickly learned that the kids do not judge you- they just want a little love and attention. They are great. And so sweet. My parents keep asking if I am jealous. And I must say, the only thing that bothers me at all is trying to tell a story- or talk on the phone- b/c everything is so busy on the other end. But I am honestly so happy for my parents, and for my little sister Alaina- to be able to experience what it is like to be a big sister for a while.

My world is constantly changing. I am continually amazed when I stop to take a look around. A year ago, I was brand new here! Knew almost no one. Didn't know where anything was, or who to hang out with. And now, I am having the time of my life. I honestly am. My biggest challenge now is trying to fit this new lifestyle in with the homeowrk and 32 hrs of work I do every week (yes, I know, I didn't realize I worked that much til I did the math yesterday).

I am so excited about things to come- and know that it is only going to get better.

I should have done this a long time ago. So this is several weeks behind. But in mid July I had the honor and priveledge of traveling to Virginia Beach with Paula and Gina to dig a large hole in the sand. Needless to say, from the photos that you are about to view, our journey was successful.

We also ate out a lot, blacklight 3D mini golfed, and swam a lot. But obviously the hole was the main attraction.

Making Love Bubbles

So I have been babysitting Lee's male beta fish Oscar since he has been in boston. Placed oscar right beside Betsy's female beta, Cletus (click for pic- that is Oscar in the background). Past couple of days, I have been noticing a bunch of small foam like looking bubbles at the top of Oscar's bowl- I have NEVER seen this sort of thing in Oscar's bowl before- so of course my first thought is: "OMIGOSH THERE IS SOMETHING WEIRD IN OSCARS BOWL HE MUST BE DIEING I AM KILLING OSCAR!!"

Called Lee- he had never seen it either. Finally looked it up online. Apparently, actually blow these bubbles when they are extremly happy and healthy.... and well, ready to mate. hahah.

There were actually a TON more than in the picture-but when dad came to visit this afternoon he popped a bunch of em- poor oscar- going to have to start blowing more bubbles...

So basically, all week I have been thinking I was killing the stupid fish- and the entire time the fish was just blowing bubbles. Probably thinks Cletus is cute. :-P

Welp, off to Washington DC tommorow. :) No computer for 5 days- ahhhh!

ADHD

Saw an article on ADHD this morning on MSN.com. And I have been doing some thinking... who says ADHD is bad?

I did a ton of research this morning, about people on medication for it and such things, talking about if you have these symptoms you should speak with your doctor about it: talking about how if you are constantly late b/c you are distracted by things (check), have trouble memorizing a lot of stuff (check), have trouble concentrating on large conversations (definitly check), have trouble memorizing this list of symptoms (check), have strange amount of energy (check), has difficulty starting a seeminly tedious task (check) and have to be constantly reminded about appts (check).

So what exactly does the medication do for you? Help you concentrate, help you remember things, calm you down? I am not sure that I would want a medicine tinkering with my mind like that.

I am pretty sure I have/had/whatever ADHD- as a child definitly, and probably now- my mind is always racing- and I definitly have all those "symptoms". But would I really want to be on medication?

It is said that people with ADHD are highly energetic and creative. Why would you treat that? It is also said in many places that ppl with ADHD are "just as smart" as people without it. No freaking duh. I think they are even smarter. - just give em a way to harness that energy. But perhaps this is what meds do? I dunno. Doubt it some how. Probably just calms you down. I mean, I am generally energetic from the time I get up to the time I go to bed. And the figetting probably keeps me thin. And the energy makes me ready for anything.

But then again if this miracle pill makes ya remember stuff - sign me up.

This probably seems like a very strange rant. But I swear, I am curious to see if I can get a sample of this "medication" just to see how it affects me. Maybe we shouldn;t be trying to medicate this problem at all. Maybe we should just be teaching kids and adults to harness this thing - like their secret weapon... and who knows that could be accomplished with that much energy and creativity.

Scoliosis Strikes Again

Found out Alaina (little sister) actually has bad/potentially severe scoliosis today. They had kept her monitored all the while I was undergoing treatment (had yrs of backbrace and surgery in 2001)- and they had recorded a slight curve in her- but just kept a watchful eye out and nothing more. Well, last we knew her curve was around 10-15 I believe- went for a check up today (as recommended by her regular doctor)- she has one big curve at the top of her back- 41 degrees. A big difference since the last time they had her checked. I was shocked. Now she is too old to brace (16). And this isn't enough to do surgery yet.. but they are seeing her again in about 7 months- and if her curve goes up to 50 they are going to start discussing surgery.

I am cross posting this to gotscoliosis because I was skeptical- and so was she about continually getting check ups- we did not think that her small curve would ever amount to anything. They warned us that siblings of scoliosis patients are much more likely to also have severe scoliosis. We ignored it- and probably shouldn't have. :-/

At least we know what to expect from here-

Welp, changed my mind, decided to have one more fantabulous day of summer before the big grand beach one. Basically just b/c I am lazy and have not yet gotten around to photoshopping 150+ pictures. Summer school is over, I am back from vacation- and so, you know what time it is, it is time for the BELATED MORGAN'S FANTABULOUS DAY OF SUMMER: INSTALLMENT 3!

Here we go. Lee got the random idea in his head a few weeks ago to go on a small hike with a couple of friends. And of course, being the equally random person that I am, after making everyone vow that said hike would be no longer than a couple of miles, I hopped aboard.

But of course, as we approached our destination, Roan Mountain (very pretty btw- covered with rhododendrens), it started to pour down rain. Naturally. Yet we carried on. And on. And got pretty darn wet. In fact I couldn't even really take the camera with me on the actual hike for fear of water damage. That was tragic in itself. After probably not even a 1/5 of a miles of some stupidly small amount of walk, the thunder and lightning started getting to us and we decided that a rhododendren & tree covered mountain was not the best place to be and headed back down.

When we got back to the jeep we got the camera back out for one last ride. Lee supervised me making sure that I was not plucking the rhododendrens off of the plants but instead picking them up off the ground for the photo shoot (the prior is technically illegal). We got a few last photos, packed up, and pretty much called it a day.

PS: we did stop at a dam on the way back just for kicks. - And then a Mexican restaurant- so no total loss - w00t!

Morgan's Fantabulous Days of Summer: Installment 2, Morgan visits BMS... and a car eating robot.

Figured it had been a sufficient amount of time since my last FABTABULOUS DAY OF SUMMER post, so here goes Installment #2: Morgan visits BMS, and a car eating robot.

When offered to go see a 40-ft tall car eating robot named "Robosaurus" for free- what better way to spend a Friday night! Who could turn that kinda offer down? And so I strapped the camera on and went for a ride.

Firstly I wasn't sure if we were ever going to get to see anything- since it looked for a while as if the only show we were going to see would resemble more of a reinactment of Noah's Arc. But after a while the rain let up, and suddenly large "road drying" vehicles covered the dragway, followed by a clown they had hired to stall the crowd as BMS prepared for it's show.

Due to my top secret connections to Bristol Motor Speedway (Lee), shortly after my arrival I was allowed to sign my life away in blood to promise to not sue the speedway in case of freak accident, thusly receiving the pink wristband that got me free reign over dragway. I was able to see the track from every angle. Press box, the suites, the stands, the roof, the ground right next to the speedway... fairly nice.
..

Only twice did we get close enough to risk and appendages or our lives in general. Once during the jet racers (smoke from those buggers almost blew me away), and again during the monster truck demonstration. Ha. Also started looking for some ear plugs around this time. ;) Never got closer than any of the other media ppl, so I figured if I were to die at that moment, at least I would not die alone, and I would have been surrounded by cameras, so that I would imagine would be a nice way to go.

A few drag races, monster truck demos, car explosions, and lame clown jokes later, came the grand finale...

THE GIANT CAR EATING ROBOT.

Why a giant car eating robot you ask? Because they could. And anything that is giant, and eats cars, is just cool.

It was "Robosaurus", and well, frankly...
...it was giant and it ate cars.

Not too many ways to really embellish upon this part of the story simply b/c I do not know how to make the magnitude of a 40-ft tall flame throwing car crushing robot anymore exciting than it already sounds so you are just going to have to look through the photos and see for yourself.

Welp, I guess that is all for now. Tis 11:30, I have school tommorow, and someone else whom seems to have fallen asleep on my couch waiting for me to finish posting needs to get up and go home b/c it is past his curfew. Goodnight and good luck.

Dad came down to mow the lawn today and suggested that I trim the rose bush sometime. After finding the itty bitty prunners that I had stashed away in my condo in that large box labeled "tools" that I have touched all of 1.5 times since I have lived here, I happily began trimming the rose bush. For some reason, I really enjoyed trimming the bush. This is a stretch for me. I am not an outdoors person. But it was very nice to feel sorta productive, on such a nice sunny day... and so soon after the rose bush was all nice and trimmed down, I began to eagerly look for other things to trim.

I trimmed and trimmed and trimmed some more and that is when I saw it. The giant fern/shrub/bush thing. Perfect! I realize that most ppl trim their fern/shrub/bush things with a large appliance of some sort, I am not really up on these things, but you probably know what I am talking about. But being the helpless poor college student that I am, I decided to use the prunners. Besides at this pt I was finding it to be very theraputic....

I have tried googling to find out what exactly you call this thing- b/c I am not really sure if it is a fern/shrub/bush thing or even if it is a hedge- I am not sure of the differences- and when I feel lucky on google all I get in return are political websites. George Bush - foiling my plans once again- can't even do shrubbery research without him messing me up.

To make a long trimming story short- after about an hr I had this thing whipped. Gave it a nice new make-over. And for someone whom has never trimmed a bush before (yes I am helpless), I was pretty proud of myself.

Ewwy I just saw a spider on my wall and had to squish it. Nasty. - See that could have been an entirely separate Morgan's Fantabulous Days of Summer entry right there- cept I would much rather repress that memory than document it.

Boredom taken care of?

Welp, lots of things have changed since yesturday. Gina has invited me to the beach, and that is looking promising... that should take up about a week of time right when school is over. Got an e-mail this morning from the digital media department at ETSU, and they want me to work the summer camp in late July, and have also asked me to be webmaster for the department in the fall. All of this will keep me busy until Aug, when I go to Washington DC for a newspaper convention. Then when I get back from that, I will begin gearing up for my gig with the newspaper- and begin planning for our newspaper workshop. By this time school will start and I will have both the paper and the digital media webmaster position. Phew.

Plus, I have several freelance design jobs in the works.

So yeah, I am good to go again. I have a nice plan. Yay! It is nice when everything comes together.
